What is Plagiarism?
Definition
"The practice of taking someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as one’s own" (Oxford Dictionaries).
Copy & Pasting (Or Retyping) Without Citing
You have probably heard before that copying and pasting, or retyping word-for-word without citing your source is considered plagiarism. Even if you are only copying a few words at a time, it is always best to show that you are taking these words from someone else. This goes for other things, too - not just words. You should also give credit when you use other people's photos, music, or video.

Paraphrasing without Citing
Paraphrasing is taking someone's thoughts or ideas and putting it in your own words. If we look at the definition of plagiarism above, we can see that copying someone's ideas without giving them credit is still plagiarism - even if you say it differently. It's important for you to be able to rephrase someone's ideas, just make sure you let everyone know where you got the information from. |
